My eyes popped open when my phone vibrated against my nightstand. Looking at my illuminated clock on the wall, I saw that it was a little after two in the morning. Reaching for my phone, I slid it off the nightstand to see that it was Yuli calling me. She hadn’t called me this late in so long, so that alarmed me. I sat up in the bed and pressed the button to answer the phone.

“Yuli. Is everything okay?”

“Um… Um… Um…”

She did that when she was trying not to cry.

“Yuli, talk to me.”

There was a moment of silence before I heard Sayi’s voice on the line.

“Hey, Jordan. Sorry to wake you. Yuli is bleeding and we are going to the emergency room. I’m sure everything is okay, but we just want to be sure.”

“Okay, I’ll meet y’all there. Have you called Mom and Dad?”

“No, she didn’t want to wake them. She just wanted to call you to keep you in the loop. We’ll see you there,” he said and ended the call.

I was sure that he was just trying to reassure Yuli, but I could hear the worry in his voice. He knew that I could keep Yuli calm for real. Hopping out of bed, I went into my closet and pulled out a pair of sweats and a hoodie. It took me five minutes tops to get dressed. I grabbed my badge and keys before I rushed out of the house.

On the way to the emergency room, I thought about everything that could be wrong with Yuli. For a moment, I panicked, but calmed down and put on my doctor’s hat. One of the main things could be that she was having a miscarriage, but she wasn’t screaming and hollering in pain, so it couldn’t be that. A miscarriage that far along would hurt like hell and she would barely be able to speak a word. She could have a sexual transmitted disease, but I knew Sayi was not moving out in the streets like that. The only thing left that it could possibly be was a urinary tract infection. If she, in fact, had a UTI, she’d be okay but we needed to test everything, just to be on the safe side.

Luckily, I was able to get a parking spot right up front. After I got out, I rushed into the ER and didn’t see my sister.

“Hey, Emma. Where is my sister, Yuliana Mathis?”

“Hey, Dr. Kennedy. They just took her back. I can buzz you back or do you want to wait out here.”

“Buzz me back.”

She pressed the button and the doors opened up for me. I peeked into a few rooms before I found Yuli.

“Jor,” Yuli called my name before I hugged her.

Immediately, I went into doctor mode and started pressing all over her body, asking her if she had pain anywhere. She hissed out when I pressed on her uterus.

“It hurt right there. Oh my gosh,” she groaned.

“I’m thinking it’s just a UTI, but it won’t hurt to get tested for any and everything.
